TORRANCE — A single goal by NAIA leading goal scorer, UAV’s senior forward Manuel Medina was all the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers (11-8-0) would need to blank Simpson University (6-11-0), 1-0, on Wednesday in a California Pacific Conference Championship quarterfinal men’s soccer match at El Camino Stadium.
With the win, the Pioneers advance to the semifinals and will play the No. 2 seed, Marymount California University todayat 1:30 p.m. PST. The Pioneers defeated last season’s Cal Pac Champions, Marymount California, earlier this season in the two team’s only matchup, 2-1 on Sept. 27.
The match got off to a slow start, with neither team able to get anything going as they entered the intermission tied, 0-0. Both defenses held their ground for the first part of the second half as well, but it was UAV that would break things open with a goal at 63:58, an unassisted score off the foot of Medina, and after holding Simpson scoreless for the remainder of the match, the Pioneers would go on to earn the shut-out victory, 1-0.
Junior goalie Luis Garnica (Corona, CA) earned the shutout, facing six shots and making two saves. UAV totaled 26 shots during the contest, including an astounding 18 on-goal.
