PHELAN — The Paraclete boys golf team finished second in the Serrano Diamondback Golf Tournament, one stroke behind first-place Saugus on Monday.
Saugus shot 368 with its four-man team, while Paraclete shot 369. There were 14 teams at the tournament.
Paraclete golf coach Newton Chelette said when the team found out they had lost by just one shot, each one of them took responsibility, lamenting that one extra stroke they took during the match.
“It was nice for them to think how they could have made it better for the team instead of pointing fingers, not that they would,” Chelette said. “I’m very proud of the guys.”
Cade Mercier led the Spirits with an 85, while Sammy Green shot an 87, Elijah Salazer shot 93 and Lucas Schatz had 104.
Paraclete will compete in a league match at Sierra Canyon today.

Western State Conference
VALENCIA — The Antelope Valley College men’s golf team finished seventh out of nine teams with a score of 446 in a Western State Conference match hosted by College of the Canyons at Valencia Country Club on Monday.
The match was rescheduled from a rainout on Feb. 4.
College of the Canyons was first in the tournament, followed by Santa Barbara in second and Ventura in third.
Trevor Hoffmeyer led the Marauders with an 84.
“The team has shown improvement each round of conference play but we’re far from getting the results we would like to see at this point of the season,” AVC coach Brad Hazard said. “We have to learn to minimize our mistakes and become more consistent. I know that the guys are motivated to get on the course and get to work.”
AVC’s next WSC match will take place next Monday at Santa Maria Country Club.
