QUARTZ HILL — The Quartz Hill softball team rallied from a seven-run deficit to beat Highland 9-7 in a Golden League game at Quartz Hill High on Thursday, forcing a two-way tie for first place between the two teams.

The Rebels (9-1) trailed the Bulldogs (9-1) 7-0 entering the fifth inning. Quartz Hill scored four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Jordyn Billodeaux went 4-for-4 with three RBIs for Quartz Hill, Demi Hauser was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Brynn Carcamo was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Quartz Hill pitcher Katie Zuniga escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, giving up one run and finished with six strikeouts in seven innings.

Highland scored four runs in the second, two in the third and one run in the fourth inning, as Quartz Hill committed three errors. Highland also made three errors.

Highland senior Jocelyn Carrillo and junior Rozelyn Carrillo both went 2-for-4, Isabella Herrera hit a three-run home run in the second inning and Highland pitcher Annika Gugler struck out two batters in a complete game.

“Highland came out with a lot of energy, ready to play,” Quartz Hill coach Robert Drennan said. “We also came out with energy. We were two different softball teams today. Once again Katie pitched her heart out.”

Quartz Hill will face Palmdale in two games next week.

Boys Tennis

Knight 18, Littlerock 0

LANCASTER — The Knight boys tennis team dominated a Golden League match against Littlerock, winning every set in an 18-0 win at Antelope Valley College.

Knight No. 1 singles player Emmanuel Reynoso swept his three sets 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

No. 2 player Alexis Villa won two sets 6-0, 6-0 before alternate Axel Galaz won a set 6-0.

No. 3 player Andres Rodriguez went 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Knight’s No. 2 doubles team of Edwin Quintanilla and Edwin Rodriguez won 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

The No. 1 team of Daniel Carillo and Emilano Alonso won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 and the No. 3 team of Allan Moody and Miguel Cedomio won 6-0, 6-0, 6-2.

Quartz Hill 15, Burroughs 3

RIDGECREST — The Quartz Hill boys tennis team defeated Burroughs-Ridgecrest 15-3 in a nonleague makeup match on Thursday.

The Rebels won all nine doubles sets and No. 1 singles player Isaac Kim and No. 2 Weston Allen both swept their three sets. Kim won 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 and Allen won 6-0, 6-3, 6-0.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alec Shirly and Henry Andrews went 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, the No. 2 team of Connor Chang and Kanwar Deol won 6-2, 6-4,  6-0 and the No. 3 team of Albert Wuelleth and Nikil Sunku went 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Quartz Hill will host Littlerock on Tuesday.

Women’s  Softball

avc 11, Barstow 0 (5)

LANCASTER — The Antelope Valley College softball team remained undefeated in the Western State Conference with an 11-0 win over Barstow in five innings on Thursday at Antelope Valley College.

AVC pitcher Briana Garrett struck out 11 batters in five innings for the Marauders (28-7, 11-0), giving up three walks and no hits. Garrett also went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs and a home run.

Isabelle Gomez was 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and hit her first career home run, Syann Winbush was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Maritza Arroyo was 1-for-1 with an RBI triple.

AVC will host Fullerton today in a nonconference makeup game.


Desert Christian 11, 

Lone Pine 1 (5)

LANCASTER — The Desert Christian baseball team finished the regular season by winning the Desert Mountain League title with an 11-1 win over Lone Pine in five innings at Rawley Duntley Park on Thursday.

Senior Chris Gonzales hit an inside-the-park home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning for  the Knights (11-7, 4-0) and Diego Rodriguez drove in a run from second base with a bunt.

Desert Christian pitcher Walker Gordon entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the third inning and struck out three batters, giving up no runs. Gordon struck out six batters in three innings.

Desert Christian will await the release of the CIF-Southern Section playoff brackets on the last weekend of April.


Eastside 7, Littlerock 0

LANCASTER — The Eastside baseball team defeated Littlerock 7-0 in a Golden League game at Eastside High on Thursday.

The Lions (7-14, 2-7) were led by sophomore pitcher Ethan Foley, who struck out six in a complete game shutout, walking one.

Eastside senior AJ Velasquez hit a two-run home run in the first inning, senior Isaac Ortega drove in two runs and sophomore Shadi Khair hit a two-run double in the fourth.

“Ethan Foley threw a great game,” Eastside coach Chris Paxton said. “It’s not done very often.”

Eastside will play two games against Lancaster next week, starting on Wednesday.

Men’s Volleyball

Santa Monica 3, AVC 1

LANCASTER — The Antelope Valley College men’s volleyball team lost its season finale in four sets, 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 29-27 to Santa Monica College on Wednesday at Antelope Valley College.

Julian Green led the Marauders with 12 kills and eight digs, Matthew Lee  had 11 kills,  four blocks and six digs, Brandon Holderbach-Lee added 41 assists and four blocks, Jonathan Teo had six blocks, Alex Wachala finished with three blocks and nine digs and Gamaliel Escobar had 10 digs.
