GLENDORA — The Antelope Valley College baseball team beat Citrus 3-2 on Saturday in a Western State East Conference game at Glendale College.
The Marauders (7-11, 2-2) were left by sophomore starting pitcher Andrew Garcia, who struck out nine batters in seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks.
“Citrus is one of our top teams in our conference, so anytime you beat a top program, especially on their home field, it’s a great day,” AVC coach John Livermont said. “Once Andrew gets in a zone, he’s tough to get any momentum, so again he keeps us close and allowed our offense to score just enough.”
Reliever Spencer Foley threw two innings to earn the save.
Wyatt Hendrie gave the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, hitting a sacrifice fly that allowed JJ Holiday tag and score.
Citrus (7-11, 3-1) tied the game in the bottom of the first.
Sophomore left fielder Joe Lamont hit a solo home run in the third inning to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead.
“Lamont put a good swing on a good pitch and put it over the left-field fence to put an exclamation mark on the day,” Livermont said. “All and all, a great day for our baseball program.”
Later in the third, Freddie Garcia advanced to second on an error and scored on the play, which started with a strike out by Hendrie.
Griffin Hagen went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Marauders
