CALIFORNIA CITY — The California City boys basketball team defeated Desert 83-75 in overtime in the High Desert League opener on Friday.

The Scorpions (2-2, 0-1 HDL) were down by two points going into the fourth quarter and kept close with the Ravens (5-4, 1-0) throughout the final period. 

Desert’s Qwentyn Holloway hit a layup with about two seconds remaining to tie the game at 68 and force overtime.

The Scorpions had three players foul out in overtime and the Ravens capitalized. 

“The boys played a really tough game,” said Desert assistant coach Ernest Nelson. “They really showed up.”

Jaleel Walker led the Scorpions with 24 points and seven assists and added three rebounds and one steal, while Audries Bannerman just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds — eight defensive boards — four assists, one block and one steal.

Holloway recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds — 10 offensive boards — and added one assist and one steal.

“Qwentyn Holloway played a really good game tonight,” Nelson said.

Desert’s Emil Rogers scored 10 points with seven rebounds and three steals, while Marquis Morris recorded nine points, two rebounds, one assist and two steals, Javier Elliot put in three points with one block and Tyvon McBride added four rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Desert shot 23-for-32 from the free-throw line, was 6-for-26 in 3-pointers, 17-for-29 in two-pointers and recorded nine steals, 16 offensive rebounds and 21 defensive rebounds.

Desert plays Kern Valley at home on Tuesday, while Cal City hosts Riverside Prep in a non-league game on Monday before traveling to Frazier Mountain for an HDL game on Tuesday.

Paraclete 56, Burroughs 45

RIDGECREST — The Paraclete boys basketball team remained undefeated on the season with a 56-45 win at Burroughs-Ridgecrest High on Friday in a non-league game.

Amado Coleman led the Spirits (9-0) with a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Nolan Boffman added 16 points and Silas Warmsly had 11 points.

“I’m just very proud of the guys,” Paraclete coach Newton Chelette said. “It was a packed gym. It was a great atmosphere. They played with a lot of heart tonight.

“We played extremely hard and very well on defense. (Burroughs is) a very talented team.”

The two teams will play again next Friday, this time at Paraclete High.

Paraclete will play at Littlerock on Monday.

Kern Valley 50, Boron 46

BORON — The Boron boys basketball team lost a close game to Kern Valley, 50-46, in its first High Desert League game on Friday.

The Bobcats (1-8, 0-1 HDL) were down by 13 points at halftime, but fought to within one point late in the fourth quarter. Boron had some late chances, but couldn’t convert them.

“Our boys played hard,” Boron coach Broc Job said. “They never gave up, did a good job and I’m really proud of them.”

Aaron Core led the Bobcats with 17 points, while Robert Salas put in 11 and Victor Pineda added eight.

Boron will play a non-league game at Immanuel Christian in Ridgecrest on Tuesday.

Boys Soccer

Palmdale 1, Highland 0

PALMDALE — The Palmdale boys soccer team beat Highland 1-0 in a Golden League match at Palmdale High on Friday.

The Falcons (3-1) scored in the second half to beat the Bulldogs (1-3) after a scoreless first half.

Highland goalie Brian Sanchez had four saves.

“We’ve played better,” Highland coach Lemuel Galvao said. “We’re working on our consistency. I think we can play with anybody in the league, but we need to be more consistent with what we do.”

Girls Soccer

Crossroads 4, Paraclete 3

SANTA MONICA — The Paraclete girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the season in a tight Gold Coast League game against Crossroads, 4-3, on Friday.

“It’s definitely hard to get that first loss in a hard-fought game,” said Paraclete coach Tracey Hill. “Looking forward to seeing how freshmen starters and senior leaders respond moving forward.”

The Spirits (5-1-3, 0-1-2 GCL) led 3-2 at halftime, but Crossroads scored two goals in the second half to get the win.

Alyssa Gill, Alissa Gordon and Julianna Ordaz all scored goals for Paraclete. Gill added an assist along with Alexa Garcia and Kandace Chavez. Alexis Armenta played all 80 minutes in goal for the Spirits.

Paraclete will play at Tehachapi on Monday in what is expected to be a chilly, non-league game at 6 p.m.
