I have been doing my Hotspot of the Week reviews once a week for a little over five years which equates to 282 reviews! Sometimes I chose an old favorite, often times it’s a new restaurant that has popped up and quite a bit of the time it is after I have gone out to eat and found something out of the ordinary—be it the exceptional service, incredible food, or maybe just the welcoming ambiance. And, through it all my granddaughter Arissa has been with me on over half of these reviews—luckily for me she is as much a foodie as I am!
Last week while my sister, Debi, Arissa and I were out shopping, I was craving that familiar taste of a Big Mac and French fries—so I mentioned let’s go to McDonalds for a quick bite. Arissa and Debi agreed and off we went—we noticed a sign at the 1200 W. Ave K restaurant that read, “Now Open” which I thought odd as I have been there many times in the past.
Well, what we discovered was a new and improved remodel with padded seats, new style tables, interesting signs on the walls, self-ordering computers and tablets for the kids to use. While we were waiting for our order, I was reminiscing about the old days (over 50 years ago), when you walked up to a building with the giant golden arches and placed your order at the window from outside!
The menu was very limited with only a handful of items—Hamburgers, French Fries, Filet-O-Fish, Soda and Milkshakes and everything was under a quarter with the Egg McMuffin introduced slightly afterwards, and the rest is history. As we were dining, I decided to make McDonald’s my next hotspot of the week—I found it quite interesting that in the 50+ years I have been eating at McDonald’s, the one constant has always been the taste.
It’s interesting to me that with all the new items introduced over the years, when you crave a Big Mac, it doesn’t matter which McDonald’s you go to, it will ALWAYS have that flavor you were craving and you will be satisfied when you are finished. Not many places can say that, and that my friends, is a fete all in itself! McDonald’s even has an App where you order, pay & pick-up or you can have it delivered using Uber Eats. A far cry from when my family would pile in the car, drive to our nearest McDonald’s, each of us ordering what we wanted, paying and bringing it home to eat. The Ave. K restaurant is also doing table service - food delivered to your table for dine-in orders, very convenient.
The menu sports a philosophy of “The simpler the better”. Using ingredients like real butter and cage-free eggs in the breakfast items and real buttermilk in the buttermilk crispy chicken. “Pride in preparation” is their motto—as every day the kitchens work to prepare your food just the way you like it.
To make the food healthier baby spinach, baby kale, Romaine and red leaf lettuce has been added to the salad medley, the Premium Salads offer at least 2.5 cups of vegetables—now, that’s a lot of green! Order any one of their delicious salads (Southwest with crispy or grilled chicken, Bacon Ranch with grilled or crispy chicken or enjoy either salads without the chicken.
If you want a quick pick me up, you can enjoy and one of their Hand Crafted McCafé’s, Lattes—hot or iced (cinnamon cookie, caramel, French vanilla), Frappe’ (mocha or caramel), Smoothies (strawberry banana or mango pineapple), Cappuccino, Hot Chocolate or just have a Classic Coffee—a coffee haven for even the pickiest of coffee drinkers!
Of course, some things still remain the same as the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, Fillet-O-Fish, Chicken McNuggets still don the menu; even the Happy Meals only now there are healthier side and drink options—apple slices, go-GURT or organic apple juice drink.
Our order consisted of a Big Mac—mouth-watering perfection with two patties and Big Mac sauce sandwiched between a sesame seed bun. American cheese, crisp lettuce, onions and pickles top it off. Who doesn’t love and crave that oh, so flavorful big Mac special sauce? Tastes the same every time you order it—Delicious, with a capital D! One bite of this delicious mixture was absolutely fabulous—patties grilled just right as it melted in my mouth! A great sandwich on its own, add French fries and voila a delicious meal was born!
Egg McMuffin—an excellent source of protein and oh so delicious. A freshly cracked egg on a toasted English muffin topped with real butter, lean Canadian bacon and Melty American cheese. 4-piece Buttermilk Crispy Chicken Tenders (meaty, moist & crispy). Quarter-Pounder with cheese, seared on the grill, layered with two slices of melty American cheese, slivered onions & tangy pickles on a sesame seed bun). McCafé Chocolate Shake—featuring deliciously creamy vanilla soft serve, chocolate syrup and topped with whipped topping-cold, refreshing and ever so yummy. And, lastly we ordered the Mango Pineapple Smoothie—sweet combination of fruit purees and juices blended with creamy low fat yogurt and ice; a pure delight.
All three of us were having a great time eating all our favorite McDonald’s food, although I don’t really have a favorite per se as I always like whatever I order at McDonald’s because I know its going taste exactly the same each and every time—consistency is McDonalds middle name. Bon Appétit!
