Two stories during the week of February 3, 2020 to February 6, 2020 are suspect.
The first front page story on Monday, February 4, 2020, concerns a Pro-Trump group disrupting an Islamic Forum the previous Saturday. The entire story does not smell right. Seven to ten pro-Trump protesters interrupted a meeting of four attendees for the 25th Congressional seat. Among the attendees was Cenk Uygur who, you may remember, was largely responsible for the election of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
Always seeking to disrupt traditional political campaigns, it is not improbable that members of this group engineered the disruption for media attention. I do not recall any pro-Trump group disrupting any meetings anywhere in the United States; Democrats and Antifa yes, but Trump supporters no.
The second item from the AV Press came on Thursday, February 6, 2020 and concerns an AP story trying to ascribe the current ascendancy of the American economy to former President Obama. The AP reporters are, apparently, graduates of the Barack Obama University for Economic Prosperity with many classes taught by those economic geniuses know as the Squad.
If I remember correctly, the stock market closed out 2016 at 20,000 due, it is thought, to the stimulus of the upcoming Trump Presidency in 2017. The stock market today is nearly 30,000 or 50 percent higher. Each 1000 points represents about $1 trillion dollars added to the economy.
This story should have been printed on the comic pages or a special section dealing with fantasy.
Thursday’s commentary on “Uncle Sam’s spending addiction” by Veronique de Rugy was both eye popping and frightening. She wrote that each year our elite Congress is spending $1 trillion more than we are taking in. Obviously, this is unsustainable.
I was left with this question. What if China and Japan suddenly canceled our credit? Do you suppose Washington has a back up plan? Probably not. They have become as accustomed to this “foreign aid” as they have to the air they breathe. When we need money we borrow it ... when someone else needs money we give it away. We the people not only pay them to do that, we keep voting for them. Honestly though, we are seldom offered better choices at the ballot box.
However, if this credit interruption were suddenly thrusted upon us, reactions from our illustrious leaders, the ones that helped create the mess, are almost certainly predictable. The Democrats would vote to raise taxes while the Republicans would vote to cut spending. Which would you support?
Senate Republicans openly admit
To Traitor Trump’s obvious guilt.
But no witnesses, no documents,
And no real trial was allowed?
No profiles in courage amongst
This cowardly conservative crowd!
Except for Utah’s Mitt Romney and
Alabama Democrat Doug Jones.
Trump’s half of the U.S. Senate
Might as well quit and go home.
Blue Tidal Wave on the way in Nov.
GOP goes home return to sender!
No coincidence that Donald Trump,
Jeffrey Epstein’s partner in crime,
Hired Epstein’s defense attorneys
Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr
To spin, obfuscate and lie, lie, lie!
Even if Pres. Orange Julius Caesar
Got in a white Ford Bronco
With Al Cowlings and fled the cops
Headed straight towards Mexico,
The GOP-controlled U.S. Senate
Would simply refuse to convict.
Donald Trump’s gloves did not fit,
So Senate jurors must acquit?
Where have I heard this all before?
Anyone else remember 1994?
Then O.J. Simpson’s trial in 1995?
Forever hereafter he’ll be known as
Putin’s puppet Donald O.J. Trump
The guiltiest unjailed criminal alive!
Hear-ye, hear-yea, the Not-So Honorable Moscow Addison Mitchell (“Mitch”) McConnell Junior, requests your attendance at the Coronation of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Donald John Trump of the United States of America.
On this special day, Donald John Trump will be anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Not-So Honorable Moscow Addison Mitchell (“Mitch”) McConnell Junior, prior to the placing the crown the United States of America on his head. I just hope his hair comb-over does not get messed up when the crown is placed upon his head.
After the coronation, there will be another ceremony where the White House will be renamed Trump Palace in honor of the new emperor.
Several points in David Wheeler’s letter (“Hopefully IQ Prevails”, 2/05/20) regarding HR-5, Equality Act 2019, were factually incorrect.
HR-5 would amend the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of the sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition of an individual, and sex-based stereotypes. Results of a 2017 Public Religion Research Institute survey found that 70% of Americans supported laws to protect LGBT people.
Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) introduced HR-5 in the House on 3/13/19; sponsored by 237 Democrats and three Republicans. On 5/01, the Judiciary Committee voted 22-10 in favor, with all Republicans opposed.
On 5/17, the full House voted 236-173 in favor. Mr. Wheeler’s claim that “not one single Republican voted for it”, was false. New York Republicans Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Reed, Elise Stefanik and John Kotko voted in favor, as did Susan Brooks (IN), Mario Diaz-Balart (FL), Greg Walden (OR) and Will Hurd (TX).
Contrary to the vitriolic anti-gay/trans rhetoric spewed by the Heritage Foundation, Focus on the Family, American Family Association, and the Alliance Defending Freedom, prohibiting discrimination against LGBTs would not obliterate religious liberty or promote “homosexual agendas,” whatever those are imagined to be.
HR-5 would confer on an oft-maligned group the civil rights protections that were embodied in the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and afforded to classes who suffered discrimination based on ignorance, religious intolerance, and hatred. Regrettably, HR-5 will not pass in the current GOP-controlled Senate.
A pro-Trump, anti-Muslim group disrupted an educational forum for candidates running for the 25th Congressional District seat. Their problem was that the meeting was sponsored by the American Islamic Institute and held at the local mosque.
Shouting “you are not an American” at the organizer, calling Muslims un-American, one agitator trying to remove a woman’s hijab! Un-American? There isn’t too much more American than holding public meetings about potential candidates running for office. What incredibly uneducated rabble-rousers.
Why didn’t the Sheriff’s Dept. remove these bigoted, hate mongers? Isn’t trying to grab a women’s religious head scarf battery or possible assault? This behavior has to be stopped no matter what party or religion these unruly, un-American agitators belong to.
Racial hatred is not new to the Antelope Valley. Flyers were stashed under our business doors in 1992 asking “What are we going to do about the N----- problem!” Having moved from Los Angeles 3 years earlier, I wondered, “Had I made a mistake coming to this area?”
If this episode at the mosque doesn’t concern you, remember the 1946 poem, “First they came..” regarding the Nazi’s purging of chosen targets: Communists, trade unionists, Jews. The writer, a Lutheran pastor did not speak out at the time because he wasn’t a Communist, trade unionist, or Jew. When the Nazi’s came for him, there was no one left to speak for him.
Churchill said, “Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.”
We should all be very afraid.
Dear AV Press editor,
As the director of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), I share many of the same concerns expressed in the opinion piece “The kids aren’t alright.”
Over the last several months, DCFS has worked to establish a Continuous Quality Improvement Division to conduct additional case reviews to improve service delivery and support the department’s quality improvement efforts. In addition, we have also appointed a new Deputy Director to provide administrative oversight for the Palmdale and Lancaster Regional Offices and forge new community partnerships to support children and families in the Antelope Valley.
Because we believe our communities deserve highly skilled and trained staff, DCFS has reduced Antelope Valley social work caseloads by hiring additional staff, implemented bonuses to support recruitment and retention efforts, engaged nearby colleges to recruit local talent, and provided local staff trainings to reduce travel times. With the launch of Invest LA – the DCFS strategic framework to promote system improvements in safety, permanency, and well-being for children, we are now focused on three investment areas: Strengthening Children, Youth and Families, Workforce Excellence, and Community and Cross-Sector Partnership.
While we are making significant progress, this is just the beginning. Through Invest LA, DCFS will strengthen the safety net for children and families by collaborating with other county departments and community partners to make our vision of safe children, healthy families, and strong communities a reality.
