SANTA CLARITA (CNS) — A suspect who allegedly struggled with a deputy and took his radio and stun gun, then charged other arriving deputies while armed with a wooden stake, was shot and fatally wounded Thursday.

One deputy sustained a minor injury in the course of the deadly encounter, which occurred about 1 p.m. in the 25200 block of Rye Canyon Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

A deputy was sent to the location to investigate a report of a shirtless man screaming outside an urgent care facility, Lt. Brandon Dean of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, allegedly attacked the deputy and took his radio and stun gun, Dean told reporters at the scene. The deputy retreated into his cruiser and then took cover behind a pillar after the suspect broke a window on the vehicle, the lieutenant said.

Additional deputies arrived and the suspect allegedly came at them with a wooden stake, leading to the deputy-involved shooting, the detective said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the area about 12:50 p.m. on a “psych rescue” call, according to a dispatcher.

The injured deputy was taken to a hospital, according to a tweet from the sheriff’s Santa Clarita Valley Station.
