The Palmdale Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual William “Pete” Knight Christmas Parade on Saturday morning.

This year’s parade theme was “Olde Tyme” Christmas and featured 105 parade entries.

The parade began at 10 a.m., at Yellen Dog Park and concluded at Dominic Massari Park.

The Antelope Valley Press entered the parade and surprised the crowd with its original 1885 Chandler and Price Letterpress, featured on the float. One side of the float showed an old time scene, in which AV Press Publisher Mike McMullin “operated” the old letterpress, while on the other side of the “wall,” a modern newspaper office scene was featured.

The letterpress has been housed in the lobby of the AV Press for decades. That sort of Linotype was commonly used by newspapers in the early 20th century, using “hot type.” Linecasting-machinery operators used keyboards to automatically drop molds of individual letters into a line.

It was obtained by the former owners of the AV Press.

The float showcased the evolution of newspapers over the past 134 years and won first place for “Best Theme.”

The win sparked conversation on social media Saturday afternoon.

Palmdale Mayor Steven Hofbauer said on Facebook: “Excellent theme representation. Impressed all judges!”

Josh Mann, the Public Sector Solutions Manager at Waste Management, posted: “Award-winning news ... and floats!”

The AV Press staff was surprised, but pleased with the win.

“All of us at the AV Press are excited that our float won for ‘Best Theme’ today,” McMullin said. “The parade was a great day for the community, as young people and old shared their talent and enthusiasm with their neighbors. We were very honored to be a part of it.”
