LITTLEROCK — Acting without discussion or dissension, Keppel Union School District’s governing Board agreed to lay off three teachers at Thursday night’s meeting.

Keppel Union has 100 teachers and is reducing the number to 97 teachers for the 2019-20 school year.

The district is in declining enrollment, in particular, Keppel Academy, which was host to the Board’s meeting, Keppel Superintendent Ruben Zepeda said after the meeting.

Zepeda could not say which grade levels would be affected.

At Keppel Academy, there are three eighth-grade classes this year. There will be three eighth-grade classes next year too, but the incoming fifth grade class only has enough students for one class. There are two fifth-grade classes now at Keppel Academy, which will move on to sixth grade. There are three sixth-grade classes now, but there will only be two classes next year.
