PALMDALE — Three men were killed Tuesday morning in a head-on collision between their vehicle and a big rig on Pearblossom Highway.
The crash occurred about 7 a.m. on Pearblossom Highway between 60th and 70th streets east., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
According to a preliminary investigation, a Nissan truck traveling southbound on Pearblossom Highway collided with semi-trailer truck traveling northbound on Pearblossom Highway. The force of the impact caused the semi-trailer truck’s cabin to erupt in flames.
Two of the three adult male occupants in the Nissan truck were pronounced dead at the scene. The third was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. The big rig driver was also transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He is expected to survive.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Nissan truck apparently veered into oncoming traffic and collided with the big rig. Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor, according to a report by Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez.
The crash forced a hard closure (with traffic barricades) on Pearblossom Highway between Avenue T (the Four Points intersection in east Palmdale) and 75th Street East that was expected to last for several hours into the late afternoon.
The crash occurred inside Palmdale city limits; the Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency in the investigation.
California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel as well as deputies from Palmdale Sheriff’s Station responded to the scene to render aid.
The investigation is ongoing, and there were no further details available by press time.
