LANCASTER — Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting death of a 25-year-old man on Sunday night.
The shooting occurred at approximately 7:40 p.m. at Avenue J-12 and Challenger Way.
According to a report from the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, Lancaster station deputies responded to an assault with a deadly weapon, gunshot victim call. When they arrived they found the unidentified black male adult suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the upper torso.
The victim was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A brawl on the street involving approximately 30 people ensued in apparent reaction to the shooting, resulting in closures of Challenger Way and nearby Avenue K. The hospital was placed on lockdown after the victim was transported there.
Monday brought more conflict, with family members of those involved in the shooting incident causing disturbances and being uncooperative, the sheriff’s department said. Deputies were requested to the scene, and a tow truck was called to remove a vehicle from a parking lot.
There is no description of the suspect or suspects. Investigators believe the incident may be gang-related.
