SAYLES, Shirley Ann
SAYLES, Shirley Ann Passed peacefully in her sleep May 6, 2018. She was a loving wife, mother, nurse, hospital administrator, educator, and community servant. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Shirley knew she had a good heart, unselfish and generous personality, and strong character. Born in Ashtabula, Ohio on Jan. 2, 1936 to Archie and Rose White, the third of three children. Following graduation from Edgewood High School in 1954, she moved to Cleveland where she attended St. Luke's School of Nursing from which she graduated in 1957. Met the love of her life, Gerry Sayles, while at nursing school and they .were married on Sept. 21, 1957. After living in Dayton, Ohio for 2 years, they moved to Lancaster in Sept., 1959. Soon after arrival, Shirley started her career in nursing at Antelope Valley Hospital. She spent the next 34 years at the hospital where she eventually become the Director of Nursing. While working full time, she earned a Bachelor's degree from Redlands University and then a Master's degree in Health Management from Cal State Los Angeles. Shirley was deeply involved in the community serving Lancaster United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society, AV College Foundation, and Lancaster Community Shelter. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gerry Sayles and her children Debbie Riggle (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Bruce Sayles (Chatsworth, Calif.), four grandsons, two great-grandchildren. A memorial service of celebration will be at Lancaster United Methodist Church, 918 West Ave J, on Saturday, May 19, at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Lancaster United Methodist Church.
