ELTON, Dr. Richard C.
ELTON, Dr. Richard C. Age 87, joined his beloved wife Joan M. Elton with Our Lord on March 3, 2018. He died in Lancaster, Calif. while resting peacefully in the presence of two of his four children. Richard was born June 2, 1930 to Norman and Wilma Elton in Hyland Park, Mich. In 1952 he earned his B.A. in Biology, cum laude, from Amherst College, Amherst MA, where he met his future bride, Joan McCurdy. They were married June 1953 in Wellesley, Mass. In 1956 he received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, N.Y. He interned at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, HI and completed his residency in Orthopedics and Hand Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D.C. He served 23 years of active duty with the US Army Medical Corps, including one year in Vietnam where he was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal in 1968. He retired from military service as a Colonel in 1979. Richard moved his family to the Antelope Valley where he began private practice with an office at Palmdale Hospital. After nine years he moved his office to Lancaster where he served the community until he retired in 2001. After retirement he continued his medical service by working part time with High Desert Hospital until 2016. Dr. Elton touched many lives as an Orthopedic Surgeon but his life was so much more than his work. He is known by many as the doctor who bought countless lambs at the Antelope Valley Fair. Others remember him as the doctor doing his rounds with a yo-yo, or as Pockets the Clown performing yo-yo tricks for charity. He was active with his church and sang in the choir. He attended book clubs and loved writing poetry and prose. He was a member of the Antelope Valley Writers Association and his work has been published in their anthology series. He is survived by his sister Laura Cranshaw, and brother Dr. William Elton, his children James, David, Laura, June and their families. He has nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The memorial service for Dr. Elton will be Saturday, March 17 at 1:00 pm at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 502 West Avenue K, Lancaster, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Pauls Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 8836, Lancaster, CA 93539 or to the organization of your choice.
