NORDBERG, Thomas
NORDBERG, Thomas Sept. 7, 1948 - Nov. 16, 2017 Born to Arvel Essen Nordberg and Florence Francis Evans Nordberg. Tom was hired as a Flying Tiger in April 1963 as a DC-8 Second Officer. It was not long until his ability to teach was known, he was asked to join the training department as a DC-8 Second Officer Check Airman. As soon as the Flying Tigers acquired B-747's, Tom became a Second Officer Check Airman on the B-747. He remained a Second Officer Check Airman until he could hold the right seat on the DC-8, then he became Captain and a Line Pilot. The training department called on Tom again to become a DC-8 Check Airman. Tom later held the positions of Check Airman on the the B-727 and B-747. Tom was not only accomplished as a pilot instructor and evaluator, but he worked with FTL ALPA ASA member of the Tiger Grievance Committee. His thoughtfulness and ability to fairly evaluate his fellow pilots was a great help when working with grievance situations. He continued with his exceptional and professional way after the merger in 1989. Tom came to Fed Ex as a DC-8 Captain in Nov. 1990. and then a B-747 Captain in Jan. 1992, an MD-11 Captain and soon became an MD-11 Line Check Airman. He later came to work in Flight Standards and became an FAA Designee in the MD-11 and MD-10. He also worked in the Training Department to help develop computer based instruction. He worked in the MD-11 Flight Test Department from 2001-2009. He did C-check out of LAX, Mobile, Greensboro and Singapore. Tom spent time in Taipei flight testing MD-11s that Fed Ex was buying from China Airlines. He began flying the B-777 in Oct. of 2009 as a Captain and went on to be a Check Airman. Retiring on Sept. 7, 2013 moving back to Manhattan Beach, Calif. with his family. Tom is survived by his wife of 41 years Paulette Fox Nordberg and his two sons, Tom Jr. and Brandon, grand child Natalee, his sister, Karen Nordberg Rogers, many nieces and nephews.
