DE MATTOS, Edward T.
DE MATTOS, Edward T. WWII POW Veteran, Edward T. De Mattos, died at 93, Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at VA Sepulveda Nursing Care, North Hills, CA. Ed grew up in Chico, CA on his familys almond farm. In high school, he played trumpet professionally in a big-band orchestra. A WWII volunteer, he served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator mechanic gunner on a B-17 bomber. He was 19 when his plane was shot down over Berlin. Parachuting to survive, he was captured and held for 14 months at the German POW camp, Luft Stalag 1. As the war ended and their captors fled, Ed played the bugle as the U.S. flag was raised over the camp signaling the end of captivity. Once home, he attended CSU Chico, married Charlotte, and had three children. During his management career he converted over 20 failing stores to thriving ones for F.W. Woolworth along the west coast in 18 years. Ed lived in Lancaster, CA 47 years where he worked for K-Mart for 16 years and retired. He is survived by son Jim, and daughters, Marilyn and Nancy, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Rosary and service at 1:00 p.m., December 21, 2017, Ullrey Chapel, 817 Almond St., Yuba City, California.
