MENDOZA, Robin Diane (Newman)
MENDOZA, Robin Diane (Newman) R.N. Born Nov. 2, 1956 in Colorado Springs, Colo. passed away Oct. 19, 2017 in Claremont, Calif. Wife, Mother, Registered Nurse, early AIDS patient advocate. Former Antelope Valley resident passed away Sept. 19, from complications of her lifelong battle with Type 1 Diabetes. She was 59 years old. Robin graduated from Palmdale High School (PHS) in 1975. She married her high school sweetheart, Jose Mendoza (PHS '74) when she was just 18. They have two children, Jayson and Diana. Robin attended Antelope Valley College before moving away. In 1986 she obtained her Associate Degree in Nursing (ASN) and became an RN. She later went on to obtain her BSN. In 1988, appalled at the treatment of AIDS patients, she joined one of the first AIDS units in Southern California. There, she was able to provide patients who had been turned away from other institutions, medical care with dignity and respect. Many of her patients spent their final days under her care, including one of the doctors who had founded the unit and who had become a close friend. One outgrowth of the AIDS epidemic was home infusion, where patients could receive IV medication in their own home. Robin became Director of Nursing and later Branch Manager at a home infusion agency. Mrs. Mendoza worked in the medical field until 2015, most recently with the San Gabriel Pomona Regional Center. She leaves behind scores of friends and colleagues, as well as two spoiled rescue dogs; however, the light of her life was her family. After 59 years on earth, her family shared, it was her final week, at home, surrounded by friends and family, laughing and talking, that she deemed among the best days of her life.
