VELLINGA, Daniel James
VELLINGA, Daniel James born December 1, 1929, in Los Angeles, California. He went home to be with the Lord on September 11, 2017, at the age of 87. Dan attended Rosco Elementary School and Verdugo Hills High School. At age 17, Daniel enlisted in the United States Navy. Having a passion for radio his entire life, he served during the Korean War as a radio operator on the USS Mansfield, a naval destroyer. Dan often spoke of the time the Mansfield hit a mine in Inchon Harbor, blowing off the bow. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. in Burbank and Palmdale as an engineer for 38 years. Dan's various interests included sports cars, snow skiing, motorcycles, ham radio, astronomy, sailing, shooting, horseback riding, and reading. He is survived by his wife Anne Vellinga of Lancaster, daughter Vickie Vellinga of Wash., son Daniel Vellinga Jr. of Wash., stepdaughter, Natalie Czuppa of Atascadero, Calif., stepson, James Royal of Lancaster, various grandchildren, Meagan, Jeffrey, Timothy, Ethan, and great grandson Noah. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe Vellinga of Colorado and Paul Vellinga of Arizona. Dan was an active member of Soma Community Church in Lancaster. Funeral services will be held on September 21, 2017, at Halley-Olsen- Murphy Mortuary in Lancaster at 3pm.
