CARDWELL, Albert 'Cliff' Clifton, Jr. Age 70, left us to be with the Lord in the presence of his wife, Irene, at the City of Hope, Duarte, California, on Sunday, December 4, 2016. Cliff was a devoted and loving husband, a father of two, a grandfather of two boys, and a retired Army veteran. He has been a resident of Lancaster, California, for 36 years, relocating from South Carolina. The eldest of three children, Cliff was born October 24, 1946 in Gary, West Virginia, to Albert Clifton and Lula Bee (Shrader) Cardwell. Throughout his youth and young adulthood, he was called Tish. He was a 1964 graduate of Gary High School, a graduate with a BA and Masters from Chapman University. Cliff married Irene Houk, formerly of Capels, in 1964 after enlisting in the Army. He served his Country honorably for 15 years on active duty and continued his service with California National Guard, retiring in 1989. Cliff's tours included Vietnam, Europe, Okinawa, Korea and in-country. His career led him to testing aircraft for Kentron, Computer Sciences Corp. and JT3 at Edwards Air Force Base, Edwards, California, for 33 years. A highlight of his business career was as a teacher of business curricula at Embry-Riddle University, Edwards AFB. Cliff officially retired in 2013. He was a kind man with a lot of patience, a loving husband and father, devoted to raising his son, Brian, and daughter, Michelle. Cliff encouraged his children, his co-workers and those who worked for him to be the best they can be. His passion was fishing, especially with his son and friends. He did not need to make the "catch of the day," but to just "cast a line" and patiently wait. Cliff's greatest joy was his grandsons, Zachary and Nicholas. He Rejoiced in their successes. He also leaves his friends who became brothers: R obert Robert "Bob" Yawn (Gail), Tom "Lefty" Leftwich (Fran), Roger Hemme (Shirley) and many, many more. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Bee; a son, Michael A., and a sister, Kelly Regina Cardwell. Cliff left a proud legacy and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Irene, of the home; son Brian A. Cardwell and his wife Julie of Pollock Pines, California, and Michelle Y. Monette and her husband, Randy, of Lancaster, California; his brother, David A. Cardwell and his wife, Rebecca, of Princeton, WV; grandsons, Zachary A. and Nicholas E. Monette; and 8 nieces and nephews of West Virginia and a nephew in North Carolina. Cliff's ashes will be interned at a future date. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in his name to the City of Hope, Duarte, California.
