SHAMASUNDER, Dr. Hesaraghatta
SHAMASUNDER, Dr. Hesaraghatta Krishna Rao ('Sham') passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2016. Sham practiced hematology and oncology in the Antelope Valley for over forty years, always rigorous in his pursuit of intellectual excellence. He was born in his parents house in Mysore, India on July 28, 1941. He completed his medical degree at Bangalore Medical College and his post-graduation at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India. He immigrated with his wife Gayatri to the United States in 1971 to Rochester, New York for his internal medicine residency at Highland Hospital followed by his hematology-oncology fellowship in Chicago at Rush Presbyterian Hospital. He moved his family to Lancaster, California in 1977 to start his medical practice, which would become the Antelope Valley Cancer Center. He was a physician molded of a different time - infinitely compassionate and generous to his patients or distant acquaintances who sought his advice or medical expertise. Sham loved the Lakers and was a dedicated season ticket holder since 1986. In his various titles of husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and physician, he transcended these roles to also be a trusted friend. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Gayatri, his daughters Reshma and Bhavna, his son Sriram, and his six grandchildren Siona, Naija, Avni, Raina, Aisha, and Medha.
