Obituary Notices and Memorials

SKAGE, Wallace Vernon
SKAGE, Wallace Vernon joined his heavenly father on May 16, 2016. Wallace was born on October 31, 1927 in Hendricks, Minn. His parents, John and Lola (Vernlund) Skage, farmed near Toronto, South Dakota. Wallace rode his horse to a country school (grades 1-8 in one room), often accompanied by his dog. His love of pheasant hunting provided countless meals for their family. Wallace drove a 4,950 gallon tanker truck 574 miles round trip to Council Bluffs, Iowa to bring daily loads of gas to Toronto at age 17 . Wallace completed a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota State University. He was a brilliant man who could not resist re-engineering every car, bicycle and boat he owned. That drive to improve things was a natural fit with his 40 year career with General Electric where he was a flight test program manager and subsequent years as a propulsion engineer consultant. Wallace thrived on being part of aerospace accomplishments in the Antelope Valley over the past 60 years and enjoyed the people who made that era so exciting. Wallace purchased an airplane in the early 1950s. He had a commercial pilot's license and flew over four decades. He never missed an opportunity to talk shop with the pilots when he traveled on a commercial airplane, especially if GE engines were on the plane. Wallace married Betty (Nordquist), his wife of 64 years, the day after he graduated from college. She preceded him in death by seven months. Wallace and Betty filled their weekends and retirement years traveling around the world, admiring God's beautiful creation and serving with friends in Grace Lutheran Church, Lancaster Rotary, the YMCA and Camp Fire Girls. He was a church Elder and past-president of both the YMCA and Lancaster Rotary. Wallace enjoyed the outdoors, thought nothing of 50 mile bike rides around the valley, hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, water skied into his 80's and enjoyed the years of boating and camping at Lake Powell. Wallace was deeply loved and will be missed by many, including his daughter Carol Eastin (Ron), son Duane Skage (Joy), grandsons Joe Skage, Greg Skage, Scott Skage and John Skage, sister Hildegarde Krumm, extended family and friends. Services and burial will be in Toronto, S.D.
