SMITH, Joseph Bertrand Joseph Bertrand Smith was born on May 11, 1932, in Louisville, Kentucky to parents Albert Hoefer Smith and Ella Fountain. He was the sixth of eight children in the family. Joseph graduated high school in Louisville and enlisted in the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1951, as he wanted to see the world outside Louisville. In his distinguished 23-year career in the military, he served in many capacities and served in many locations both stateside and abroad. He served as a cook, meat cutter, and as an Air Operation Supervisor, and was a veteran of both the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. While stationed in St. Louis during his early time in the military, Joseph met, fell in love with and married the first love of his life, fellow USAF enlistee Gloria Greene on January 2, 1957. From this union were born sons Michael Jeffrey and Trevor Howard. Their joyful union lasted 31 years until Gloria passed away in 1988. Throughout his life, Joseph's passion was bowling where he excelled in local leagues, as well as regional and national tournaments. Additionally, he served as Vice President and as Director for the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) in Antelope Valley for many years. He also shared the love of bowling with the second love of his life, Ann Knapp, who was his life partner from 2002 until his death. They enjoyed many years of bowling together, travelling to tournaments, as well as spending time with both of their families. Joseph also enjoyed attending UCLA football games, and Los Angeles Dodger and San Francisco Giants baseball games with his sons.
