Brock Chester
BROCK, Chester Age 94. Devoted father, grandfather, and friend went home to be with his Savior Jesus Christ on January 19, 2016. Chester was born near Pearl, Illinois and grew up on farms in Stillwater, Minnesota, and Santa Rosa, California. Following graduation from Santa Rosa High School in 1941, he was inducted into the Army in 1942, serving as a gunnery instructor in the US Army Air Force until 1946. After studying under J. Vernon McGee at Biola College, he was ordained as a Conservative Baptist minister and pastored several young and struggling churches in Wyoming and California in the 1950's. Following his marriage to Joyce Gustafson in 1960, the couple moved to Lancaster in 1961 where they resided for 52 years. Chester earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from San Diego State College in 1963 and a M.A. in Education from Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) in 1966. He taught 5th grade at Roosevelt Elementary for 5 years, and then at Quartz Hill Elementary for 11 years, retiring in 1977 to pursue tax preparation full time. Chester served as an elder at Desert Highlands Baptist Church for more than 30 years. As a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he memorized large portions of Scripture and continued to preach regularly into his 90's. Known for his friendly demeanor and gentle spirit, his humility and kindness endeared him to family, friends, and acquaintances. Chester is survived by daughters Charlene (John) Bauer and Cheryl Luke, grandchildren Daniel Luke, Sharon (Will) Holmer, Nicole (Patrick) Bergin, Evan Bauer, Kristen Bauer, Calvin Bauer, great-grandson Conor Bergin, and brother Claude Brock. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joyce Brock, brothers Cecil Marlin Brock and Mardell Brock, and sisters Hyla Davis and Violet Mae Shatto.
