MERCER, Dorothy Elizabeth
MERCER, Dorothy Elizabeth Passed away on January 7, 2016 in Lancaster, Calif. She was born on October 14, 1923 in Los Angeles, Calif. where she attended John C. Fremont High School and there she received the perfect attendance award for eight consecutive years. At 92 years young, she continued to maintain a delightful sense of humor and send comical stories to family and friends. She was admired for her almost sixty years of service in the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 311, and nearly as many years in the Antelope Valley Emblem Club #76. She held most positions including being president of the Emblem Club from 1981-82 and mentored members from both organizations. Numbers were her forte, so throughout her many years with both organizations she assisted or completed the annual audits. She was well known for her Americanism, deep love of and belief in this country and the flag. Red, white and blue coursed through her veins. Through her 91st year, she continued to visit ill friends and send cards for all occasions. She is preceded in passing by her husband of 29 years, Harris Lee Mercer, sons Michael Oliver Mercer and Grant Harris Mercer. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Laurie Mercer, Son-in-law Tim Van Loon, her three grandsons, Sean Mercer, Neil Mercer and Mitchell Van Loon, and her companion of seventeen years, Duane Coughenour. There will be a service held at the Elks Lodge at 11:00 a.m. on Sat. Feb. 27, 2016 in Lancaster. A luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation.
