VANGELDER,James
VAN GELDER, James D. 'Doug' Went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 23, 2015 at the age of 75. He was born April 17, 1940 in West Hollywood, Calif., to James and Margaret Van Gelder. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Lancaster with his wife by his side. He died of congestive heart failure contributing to numerous other health factors. Doug lived in the Antelope Valley for 57 years and graduated from AV High School in 1958. He served two years in the Army stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Doug worked thirty-four years for the Department of Water Resources retiring in 2000. After retiring, he volunteered for a nonprofit organization (SCORE) as a computer technician. He liked history, following current events, cooking, and computer technology. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, rebuilding car engines, and taking flying lessons. His favorite pastime was playing online poker while chatting with a group of friends he had made all over the world. His proudest contribution to society are his children who make this world a better place. He leaves his wife of 52 years, Christine, his three children, Dana Chewning (Virgil), son Paul Van Gelder (Natalie), and son Mark Van Gelder (Khanh). Six grandchildren, Danielle (Mark), Dilyn, Lauryn, Christian, Lindsey and step-granddaughter, Kourtney, and one great-granddaughter, Raelyn. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marcia. A special thank you to the Kaiser medical staff for the excellent care over the past several years. A memorial service will be held Jan. 3, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Grace Chapel, 44648 15th St. W. Lancaster. Pastor Chris Johnson will officiate. A reception on the premises will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Chapel in Dougs name for Neighborhood Impact.
