HALEY Donald
HALEY, Donald E. USMC (Retired) Following a four-year battle with ALS, Donald E. Haley passed away on Oct. 24, 2015, surrounded by family. Born Nov. 28, 1933, he had been a resident of the Antelope Valley since 1968. He is survived by Donna, his wife of 60 years, a son, Matthew, and two daughters, Stacey (Green) and Caroline. He was preceded in death by son Gregory. Other survivors include grandchildren David and Ellen Green, Deborah and Tom Haley, and Lisa and Scott Yount, as well as son-in-law Brent, daughter-in-law Jullie and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Ryder Yount. Don served with honor and distinction in the United States Marine Corps from 1950 to 1970, with tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam, and had achieved the rank of Master Sergeant at the time of his retirement. Following his military retirement, he began his civilian career and joined the Antelope Valley Press as a staff writer for 11 years, assuming numerous reporting duties and becoming the first titled aerospace reporter for AVP. In 1981, Don left the Antelope Valley Press to become a public affairs officer for the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB and later for the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center. Throughout all phases of his career, Don felt privileged to work among a network of colleagues who were not merely co-workers but friends whom he admired and respected. Upon his retirement in 1995, Don enjoyed traveling with Donna and Matthew, and he served the local community as a volunteer for the Salvation Army and Special Olympics. To celebrate the life of Don Haley, a memorial service and reception will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015 at JP Eliopulos Hellenic Center, 43404 30th St. West, Lancaster. The family would like to thank Vitas Hospice Services for their assistance, kindness, and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the ALS Association.
