SMITH, Donald H. Duke
SMITH, Donald H. "Duke" Age 91 of Bend, Oregon passed away on July 21, 2015. He was born in Glendale, California May 5, 1924, one of 7 children. He and two of his brothers were in the armed forces during World War II with Duke serving in the U.S. Army Infantry in the European Theater 1943-1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Recognizing the value of education and utilizing his GI benefit, Duke graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a B.A. degree in August 1951 and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He subsequently completed extensive graduate studies at Cal State Long Beach. Duke married the love of his life, Rose Marie ("Bunny") November 26, 1964. An accomplished carpenter and wood worker, Duke taught industrial arts at both the junior and senior high school level before transitioning into educational administrative roles. He retired in 1985 as Principal of Desert High School at Edwards Air Force Base in Edwards, Calif. While living in California, Duke was an active member of Sertoma (SERvice TO MAnkind) of Leona Valley, CA. He and Bunny moved to Bend in 2008. Duke is survived by Bunny, his wife of almost 51 years; daughters, Colette Ware and her husband Donnie Burney, Calif., Kathy Confer and her husband Steve Venice, Calif. and son David Smith and his wife Julie Bend, Ore.; grandchildren, Natalie Mendes, Brianne Doak, Jamie Smith, and Julian Smith and great- grandchildren, Clayton Mendes and Brooklyn Caudillo. Graveside service will be held at 1pm, July 31, 2015 at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Lancaster, CA
