Obituary Notices and Memorials

PICKERING, Jon Armin Jon passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at the age of 71 after a long battle with complications due to diabetes. He was surrounded by his family and the caring members of the ICU staff at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, California. Jon was born to Robert and Catharine Pickering at their home in Burbank, California on December 1, 1943. He attended Burbank High School and served two years in the Navy between 1963 and 1965. He worked as a machinist at McCormack & Sons in Burbank and then Hydro Mill in Chatsworth where his father had been employed. He had his first daughter, Shelley with his first wife, Velma Ruth Casebolt in 1967. Eventually, Jon moved to Palmdale in 1984 with second wife, Rosario and daughter, Nicole. His happiness was complete when his son, Jon Paul was born in 1989. He loved to drive, and thought nothing of his commute to the Valley every day. But what we all fondly recall is driving across the country for summer vacations, and the fact that he was happy to drive the 175 miles to the Harris Ranch in Coalinga for a steak dinner and then back home again. He was a devoted brother to his five siblings, and made frequent trips to Arizona to be with them. He was known for his sense of humor and pranks, but he would always go out of his way to help a friend. During his time as a bachelor, Jon learned to make great waffles, chili, poor man's dinner, strawberry jam and chocolate chip cookies. He loved being by Edwards Air Force base the local minor league baseball team - the JetHawks, because they combined his passion for planes and baseball. He is survived by Rosario and Tim Wilmes; daughters, Shelley and Nicole, ever devoted son Jon Paul, sons-in-law, Bob Perpall and Pete Zayas; sister and brother-in-law Susan and Lloyd Robinette, many nieces and nephews and five furry cat friends. He was preceded in death by sisters, Gwen and Kathy; brothers, Bob and David and brother-in-law Jack Foss. A memorial event is planned for Saturday, June 6, 2015. Please email pickering for information.
