MEWBORNE, Jack A 54 year resident of the Antelope Valley passed away at his home on July 3, 2014. He was born on August 19, 1929 in Sterling, Illinois. Jack began his life with a love of music, starting violin lessons at the age of 6. He moved to Madison, S.D. with his family and continued his study of violin and voice. In high school, he entered voice and violin national competitions and took home several first place medals. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1949 and was assigned to the 339th Fighter Squadron, Armament Division. He received an honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant after serving in Japan during the Korean War. He enrolled in Dakota State College in 1952 and graduated with his B.A. in Music. Jack met the love of his life, Marilyn Tolk in a coffee shop; they were married on October 16, 1953. At their ceremony, he sang, 'Because' before his bride came down the aisle. He moved to California in 1958, teaching band and choral groups in Belleflower. When an opportunity arose to go into banking, he changed careers and worked for Security Pacific Bank for 25 years, first in Palmdale and then in Lancaster where he finished his career as a Vice President. During this time he also completed a Masters Degree in banking from SMU in Dallas. Throughout his life Jack continued singing in college, service organizations and church choirs. He had the privilege of singing at the Hollywood Bowl with the Roger Wagner Chorale with guest conductor William Walton of England. He loved basketball and never missed watching Laker and UCLA Bruin games. An avid golfer and longtime member at Antelope Valley Country Club, he achieved 11 holes in one. Jack Mewborne was preceded in death by his parents Violet and Leve Mewborne, and brother Leo (Ardie) (Sheila). Jack is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn, sons, Drs. Mark (Beverly) of Lancaster and Rick (Marie) of Oroville, Calif.; six grandchildren, Amanda Mewborne Canter (Tom) Lancaster, Aubrie Mewborne Forero (William) San Diego, Kent Mewborne, San Diego, Allana Mewborne Garza (Ryan) Lancaster, Charlie Mewborne, Chico, and Joey Mewborne, Chico; six great-grandchildren, Daphne and K.C. Canter, Isabella and Ariana Garza, Kaden and Kaya Forero; brother-in-law Charles Tolk (Judy), Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister-in-law Deanna Liddiard, St. Paul, Minn., and many nieces and nephews and friends. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and love and pride for his family. Thank you for the many cards and flowers. Burial will be in Rose Hills Cemetary in Wentworth, S.D. No services to be held per Jacks request.
