GODDE, Gerald
GODDE, Gerald 'Jerry' Valentine Born February 14, 1932, on the family ranch at 70th Street West in Lancaster CA, to Tony and May Godde. He attended Del Sur School, Loyola Boarding School, AV High School, Cal Poly and received a degree from AV College. Jerry joined the U.S. Coast Guard serving in Long Beach, Balboa and on the Minatonka to Japan and Korea. He loved competing in the Rural Olympics at the AV Fair. He was an 'Alfalfa is King' winner, three time winner of the Antique Car Potato Race, and in 1954 while competing in the Tractor Race flipped his tractor, was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and had to walk back to the fair. During that time, his future wife Miss Antelope Valley (Barbara Shumaker), was awarding the trophy to the winner of that race. They met and married one years later. Son Max was born in 1957, daughter Renee followed in 1960. Jerry worked at US Rubber, Machinery Overhaul and Convair. Jerry farmed alfalfa on their Westside ranch. September 1966 he was Kiwanis Club 'Farmer of the Month'. November 1966 received an award from the 'Friends of the Land'. He earned his private pilots license in 1968 and for the next twenty years he took off and landed his plane from the ranch where he farmed for over forty years. He loved to collect and restore Antique and European cars. He enjoyed World War II documentaries. Jerry passed away September 13, 2014 from prostate cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings. Jerry was loved and will be greatly missed by his wife Barbara; his son Max (Judy); his daughter Renee (Kenny), many friends, family and the six grandchildren who knew him as 'Papa'. Private service.
