MITCHELL, Earl J. Born Dec. 3, 1923 in Paris, Texas, passed away Sept. 1, 2014 in Lancaster, Calif. Was an Eagle Scout and graduatedfrom high school at age 16. After his military service he attended USC 1947-49, graduating with a BS Degree. During World War II, Mr. Mitchell volunteered for the US Army Air Corp and subsequently served with the 98th Bomb Squadron of the 7th Air Force (Pacific), accumulating 500 Aerial Combat Hours as a Waist Gunner on the B-24 Liberator named the "Homesick Angel." He was awarded 3 Bronze Battle Stars, 6 Air Medals, and the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). He worked in the aerospace industry over 30 years and was a valuable member of the Apollo Space Program. Earl is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Barbara; his daughter Paula Willis (David), 8 grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren, and the last remaining crew member of the Homesick Angel, Bill Hope. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Rebecca Gonzalez. Memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014 at New Hope Community Church, 405 E. Ave. J, Lancaster. Burial with full Military Honors was held September 9, 2014 at Riverside National Cemetery.
