GUREL, Mehmet Mehmet Gurel passed away on September 1, 2014 in Lancaster, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Captain Mehmet Memduh Gurel and Emine Ustuner and his older brother Ahmet Gurel. Mehmet Gurel was born on December 11, 1925 in Eregli, Turkey. He attended boarding school and enlisted in the Turkish army. After having taken part in an international academic excursion to the Hoover Dam while in college, he decided to immigrate to the United States in 1955 after graduating from Istanbul University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He started his new life in Columbus, Ohio and received his citizenship in 1973. He continued his education - first earning a Master's Degree in Operations Research from the Case Institute of Technology, then a PhD in Philosophy from New York University. He married Donna Schneider (now deceased as Donna Gurel), and had two boys: Erol and Douglas. Mehmet and Donna moved to Kirkland, Washington, where he was initially employed as a Professor for the University of Washington; teaching statistics to Master's - level nursing students. Throughout his life, he held several managerial and administrative positions within the capacity of Operations Research, and he did so with a wide variety of companies including Weyerhaeuser, American Airlines, Boeing, and finally retiring in 1990 with Rockwell Aerospace. He achieved numerous awards during his career. His desire to remain active in retirement using his academic credentials persuaded him to take on several volunteer roles, including a position at the Antelope Valley Medical Center. He had several close friends, including the former Prime Minister of Turkey, and was involved in many social clubs, primarily backgammon, and also in organizations that would host Turkish picnics for the local ethnicity he was proud to be a part of. He enjoyed all sorts of political and cultural discussions and debates. In addition he enjoyed watching soccer, day trips to tranquil mountainous locations, and frequent visits to the waterfront - whether it be Lake Washington or the California beaches. He is survived by his present wife Beverlee Gurel (Schulthies) and his two sons Erol Gurel and Doug Gurel. A Celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, September 6, 2014 in the Leisure Lake Recreation Center 48303 20th St West Lancaster CA. 93535 Lunch to follow.
