HERRON, Mildred Odessa
HERRON, Mildred Odessa May 18, 1915 - July 23, 2014 Mildred went to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 99. She was born the daughter of Orville and Grace Snider of Farmington, Iowa. She was married to her loving husband; Cleo, for 52 years. Mildred graduated from the esteemed Chillicothe Business College in Missouri. She came to Antelope Valley in June 1942 to visit her husband Cleo who was active military. She planned to visit a week; however, upon receiving a secretarial position at Edwards Air Force Base (Muroc) made Lancaster her lifelong home. Mildred worked at the EAFB 48 years from 1942 until 1988 serving under 2 base commanders and 21 physician commanders at the Base Hospital. At retirement she held the record for the longest base employee. During her career she had the privilege to meet Charles Lindberg, and work with Chuck Yeager and Brig. General Stanley Bear who had become a White House physician. Upon retirement Mildred received a letter personally signed by Ronald Reagan on White House stationary recognizing her many years of service. For over 35 years Mildred was an active member at the First Baptist Church (Grace Chapel) in Lancaster where she taught children's Sunday school. She volunteered at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center accumulating a total of 12,194 hours. She is survived by one son David A. Herron (Vanessa Damron) of Lancaster, Calif.; one daughter Sandra L. Goodwin (Dr. Steve Goodwin) of Jackson, Tenn.; one sister Shirley Fleming of El Dora, Iowa; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren and three step great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Cleo and one brother Vernon Snider. The family has requested that memorial contributions be directed to Grace Chapel Church in Lancaster or Antelope Valley Hospital Auxiliary, volunteers . Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Joshua Memorial Park, Lancaster www.joshuamortuary.com
