CRANE, Cora Belle Corky
CRANE, Cora Belle 'Corky' Corky was born on December 18, 1919 in Anoka, Minn., she passed away June 25, 2014 in Palmdale, Calif. Corky was the third of eight children (first to survive past infancy) of John Edgar and Mary Leola (Pendell) Walburn. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings, Ruth, Ruby, Willard, Irma, Thelma, Donald, and Icy Ann. Corky graduated from high school in 1937. After five years as a Deputy Clerk of the District Court in Anoka, she was able to afford college and began attending Evanston Collegiate Institute (now Kendall College) in Evanston, Ill. in 1945. She transferred to the University of Southern California in the fall of 1946 and received her BA in Religious Education in 1949. She would alter earn her MA in Education and Supervision Credentials from USC, Los Angeles. While at USC, she met Guthrie Arnold Miller and they were married on July 10, 1949. They had two sons, Mitchell Edgar, 1952 in Baltimore, Md., and Glenn Stewart 1954 in Billings, Mont. Guthrie died on Jan. 31, 1958. On Dec. 26, 1971, she married Howard Max Crane, born Feb. 14, 1918, the father of two daughters, Laura and Gale both deceased. Corky taught elementary grades throughout her years of teaching. After brief assignments in Montana and central California, she taught for six years in Acton, Calif., followed by twenty years in Palmdale, Calif., before retiring in 1981. Corky was busy in her retirement, being actively involved with the Genealogy Society and California Retired Teachers Association, as well as volunteer work with her church and the senior center in Palmdale. She and Howard also traveled extensively and researched family history. Corky is survived by her husband, Howard, sons, Mitch (Janet Dunn) and daughter Jennifer Mullins (Steve) born May 25, 1974; and Glenn, and great-grandchildren, Shannon born Oct. 16, 1998 and Zachary born Aug. 14, 2000, and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. There will be a graveside service at Desert Lawn in Palmdale at 10 am, June 7, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family would value the sharing of a written remembrance of Corky.
