SCHMITT, Hedy Frieda Junger
SCHMITT, Hedy Frieda Junger Sept. 27, 1920 - Jan. 23, 2014 Hedy F. Schmitt was a US Citizen, born and raised in Basel, Switzerland. Hedy left Switzerland before World War II for England. Trapped there when Germany declared war she joined the English Women's Army. She spoke very little of her service though and it was only in her later years that she admitted to one story of her service. She once "got in trouble" because her assignment at the time was to clean the half-track personnel carrier vehicles and not take one for a drive. She returned to Switzerland, met and married Martin Schmitt. They then settled and owned bakeries in Lancaster and Palmdale. The most significant one being the Palm Knolls Bakery in Palmdale, which they sold in 1963. Their last bakery though was the Lancaster Bakery which closed in 1967 following Martin Sr's passing and becoming God's own personal Baker. The closing of the Bakery found Hedy making a couple career changes. Ultimately a sales associate for JC Penny until retirement at the age of 72. On the evening of Jan. 23, 2014 with family members at her side, Hedy passed away peacefully at the home of her son Martin. She is survived and missed by a large family. Four children, five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Viewing Wed. 6 pm - 9 pm at Hicks Mortuary, 8837 E. Palmdale Blvd. Mass Thurs. at Saint Marys Church 10am, 1600 E. Ave R-4, Palmdale
