Obituary Notices and Memorials

SMITH, Dorothy Clarice
SMITH, Dorothy Clarice Born on July 27, 1912, in Binghamton, New York, passed on November 12, 2013, in Palmdale California. Dorothy passed away at home at the age of 101. She has waited 28 years to join her beloved husband Wayne in heaven and now they are together at last. Dorothy lost her first husband Walton Hamilton in 1933. As a young widow with an infant son, she went to work at the Binghamton State Mental Hospital in New York. While working there as a nurses aide, she met Wayne Smith, also an employee at the hospital, and they were married in 1936. In 1950, they moved to California, and eventually settled in Quartz Hill. Dorothy worked at A.V. Hospital and Wayne worked at Lockheed. They retired to Clear Lake, where they lived until Waynes death in 1985. She then moved to Hemet to be near her son Robert (who passed away in 2003). Dorothy was a pianist and organist at Quartz Hill Baptist church from the 1950s until 1979. In 1999, she returned to Quartz Hill to live with her granddaughter, and resumed playing piano at the same church. She continued as their church pianist until her 100th birthday. She is survived by her granddaughter Gail Strong and her husband Chris, and her great-grandchildren Cody, Shane and Skye Strong. When grandma was asked what was the secret to her longevity she would answer, 'I dont drink, smoke, or eat junk food.' But she did love her sweets, and we would joke that it really was the sugar that preserved her. We Love You Grandma!
