SCHMIDT, Nancy Ruth
SCHMIDT, Nancy Ruth Arnold Born in Santa Monica, Calif. on April 22, 1948. She grew up in Inglewood, the second born of four children. The Arnold Family moved to Lake Elizabeth in 1961, where Nancy attended Quartz Hill High School - Class of 1967. Nancy worked for Lockheed Martin installing windows on the L-1011 Aircraft, and later for Chevron Oil at the El Segundo Refinery where she would meet her future husband John Schmidt. Nancy and John were married in 1977. Nancy's wish for children was granted in 1979 upon the birth of her '#1 son' Thomas John, and again in 1982 with the birth of her '#1 daughter' Cheryl Jean. The Schmidt family made their home in Torrance, Calif., where Nancy was actively involved with the PTA and Girl Scouts. Nancy and her children moved to Bakersfield in November 1992. In 1993 Nancy was hired at Frito Lay for the sanitation crew, she worked there until she retired in 2012. Nancy was diagnosed with Stage IV Breast Cancer in 2003, at which time she underwent a full mastectomy and Chemo/Radiation Therapy. Nancy was a fighter and a survivor of Cancer for 10 years; however, recently her cancer had resurfaced and metastasized in several of her internal organs. She passed quietly and peacefully at the home of her niece on the afternoon of September 28, 2013 surrounded by those she loved. Nancy was preceded in death by her Father Melford I. Arnold & her mother Jean I. Arnold. Nancy is survived by her two children: Thomas and Cheryl Schmidt, two grandchildren Broderick Schmidt & Zoe Toussaint and three siblings: David Arnold, Marcia Burkhead and Gayle Pickard. Nancy was a philosopher with a unique view of the world. She had a generous and graceful heart. She loved to watch sunsets and to joke with others, she was quick witted and well loved by those she met. She will be missed by all that had the luck to know her, as well as some who did not. A Viewing is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, 2013, 5 pm - 8 pm at the Alta Funeral Home located at 2130 E. California Ave, Bakersfield, Calif. 93307. The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 2 pm Kern River Family Mortuary located at 1900 N. Chester Ave, Bakersfield, Calif. 93308.
