COKER, Lionel Van
COKER, Lionel Van Of Lancaster, Calif., passed away on February 9, 2013. He was born in Sidney, Texas on February 21, 1918. Lionel was married to Ethel OCallaghan on October 10, 1944, in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Lionel served in the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1939. He enlisted in The United States Army Air Corp in 1941, and served during World War II in the South Pacific. He then re-enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1945, where he was involved in the Berlin Air Lift. He worked as an airplane engine mechanic and then an airplane sheet metal worker. After retiring from active duty in the military in 1964, he worked for McDonnell Douglas for 20 years. Lionel enjoyed playing in his own band. He played the bass violin, Guitar, and banjo. His hobbies included camping and fishing. He was also a pilot and enjoyed flying. He was always building or repairing things. Lionel enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ethel, daughter Sharron Ament and husband Bo, son John Coker and wife Linda, son Duncan Coker and wife Aimee, grandchildren Brittney Ament, Ryan Ament, Darin Coker, Jeremy Coker, Kayla Coker-Spillis, and Crystal Wendt, great-grandchildren Christopher, Taylor, Nicholas and Raina. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, February 18, 2013, at Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary, 808 E. Lancaster Blvd, Lancaster, Calif. Burial will be immediately following service in the Veterans Section with military honors.
