Obituary Notices and Memorials

GIBLIN, James D. Sr.
GIBLIN, James D. Sr. Was born in 1931, and passed away peacefully with his family at his side on November 19, 2012. Born in Ohio, Jim joined the Air Force and shortly thereafter met the love of his life, Betty Jo York, at a roller skating rink in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Immediately upon seeing Betty, he told his friends that she was the woman he was going to marry. Sure enough, they were engaged one week later. Unfortunately, he was immediately deployed to Illinois for aircraft mechanic school and Jim and Betty had to endure a long three-month engagement before they were married on March 22, 1952. A few months later Jim was deployed to Okinawa for one year and thereafter they moved to the Antelope Valley where he completed his service at Edwards Air Force Base. Jim then took a job with General Electric at Edwards Air Force Base eventually ending up at the GE facility in Mojave where he worked as an aircraft mechanic and quality control supervisor for almost 34 years until his retirement in 1990.They were blessed with the birth of two sons, Jim and Alan. Jims sons will tell you that their dad had many hobbies and interests, which resulted in some fun adventures, including flying his Piper Cub and Ercoupe and taking his sons out to drop flour bombs and melons over the Mojave desert. He also loved skydiving (much to Bettys dismay). Another of his hobbies was beekeeping which resulted in the famous 'Bee Story' often told by his son, Alan. In later years he had a passion for building and flying free-flight model planes over the desert. Jim never met a stranger and both he and Betty always opened their home to scores of family, friends and foreign exchange students from around the world. Jim and Betty also loved traveling the world and especially loved visiting their friends in Toulouse, France, whom they were blessed to have come to know through Jims work on the French Airbus with GE. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Laura Giblin, his brothers Richard and Bob Giblin and his beloved nephew Bobby. James is survived by his loving wife Betty, son Jim and his wife Tina, son Alan and his wife Kelly, and his wonderful grandchildren, Dillon, Derek and Melissa Giblin. He is also survived by Bettys brothers and wives Fred and Helen York, Preston and Joyce Cowan, Larry Cowan and sisters-in-law Nancy and Barbara York, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim cherished his children and grandchildren. He also cherished his scores of wonderful friends, including Etienne and Eric of Toulouse, France, and all those he had the privilege of working with during his years at General Electric. It was Jims wish that his family have a celebration of life with family only. There will be no services.
