HODGES, Vernon W.
HODGES, Vernon W. Vernon was born December 26, 1929, in Roanoke, Virginia and was called home by the Lord on November 11, 2012, Veteran's Day. Vernon graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951 and in 1979, earned a Master's Degree in Systems Management from USC. He entered the United States Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant where he pursued his dream of flying. He graduated from Pilot Training in October 1952, as a Jet Fighter Pilot and flew the F-86 Sabers with the 366th Fighter Bomber wing at England AFB, Louisiana. He retired from the Air Force as a Major and began his second career in Aviation where he worked as an engineer on numerous defense programs including the B-1 Bomber. A longtime resident of the Antelope Valley, Vernon was an active member of the Lancaster Masonic Lodge, A. V. Shrine Club, VFW Post 3000, and volunteered at the Lancaster United Methodist Church Community Kitchen. Vernon was a sweet, gentle soul who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He is survived by his wife Emily, children Greg (Robyn), Michelle, Kenneth (Mindy), Kelly (Kent), Karen (Ron), and John (Christine), and 16 grandchildren; Abbey, Lauren, Grace and Josh Hodges, Nicole and Danelle Giard, Parker and Hannah Hodges, Ashley, Jacob and Seth Payne, Madison and Molly Sroka, Abigail, Moira and Keira Tinsley, One great-grandson Benjamin Muncey. Preceded in death by his son Vernon W. Hodges, Jr. and Linda Hodges (wife). A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Lancaster United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Vernon's honor to the Lancaster United Methodist Church (LUMC) Community Kitchen or Quartz Hill VFW Post 3000. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the dedicated nurses and staff at Palmdale Regional Medical Center for the wonderful care they gave Vernon over the last two months.
