THOMAS, Mary Elizabeth
THOMAS, Mary Elizabeth Born June 6, 1953, in Rockville Centre, N.Y. She passed away at the age of 59 on September 14, 2012, in Santa Barbara, Calif., after a battle with cancer. She leaves behind her husband of 35 years, Herb Bartelt, of Lancaster and her mother Eileen Thomas of N. Ft. Meyers, Fla. Mary graduated from Dominican College in N.Y., and went on to receive her double Masters in Vision and in Mobility, at University of Northern Colorado. In 1976, she married Herb Bartelt and also started her career teaching visually impaired children for LACOE. She was also a Master Teacher for the University of Bakersfield, in the area of special education, working with student teachers. After 25 years of teaching, she retired to a life of travel with her husband Herb. Together they visited 56 countries. She was a proud 30 year member of the Gamma Xi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She served as president of the Gamma Xi chapter and also Director of Area IX. She was a member of the board of the LIFE Foundation and had just started serving as their president. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at Father Serra Parish, 42121 N. 60th Street West, Lancaster, Calif., with inurnment to follow at Lancaster District Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the Antelope Valley Country Club, 39800 Country Club Drive, Palmdale, Calif. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marys memory may be made to The Chi State LIFE Foundation, 815 Cambria Way, Santa Barbara, CA 93105. It is not the number of days in your life, but the number of moments that take your breath away. Arrangements entrusted to Halley Olsen Murphy, Lancaster.
