PURCELL, Frank Lyal
PURCELL, Frank Lyal Lyal Purcell passed away at the age of 95, on May 21, 2012, in Lancaster, California. He was born October 19, 1916, in Frederick, Oklahoma. His wife of 74 years, Sybil Pettigrew Purcell, preceded him in death on August 29, 2011. Together, they came from Oklahoma to Southern California in 1937, to Antelope Valley in 1949, retiring to Escondido in 1975. From 1940 to 1965, Mr. Purcell worked at Douglas Aircraft Company and North American Aviation on several experimental aircraft. Two of these aircraft are displayed at the Smithsonians Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC. Upon his retirement from the aircraft industry in 1965, he was a real estate broker with Staff Realty in Lancaster. Sybil Purcell worked for the Antelope Valley Union High School District from 1955 to 1975, and served as secretary to the Superintendent for several years before she retired. They lived in Escondido until Sybils death in 2011, when Lyal returned to Lancaster to be near his son, Frank L. Purcell, Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Herman) Rediess, Jerilyn (Al) Richie; his son, Frank L. (Nickie) Purcell, Jr.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Halley Olsen Murphy in Lancaster, Calif., at 3 p.m.; followed by burial at Joshua Memorial Park, in Lancaster, Calif.
