CAROTHERS, Kathryn (Katie)
Katie Carothers, a longtime teacher in the Lancaster School District, recently passed away at her home in Lancaster at age 94. Katie taught at Monte Vista School for 27 years. Prior to moving to Lancaster in 1961, she taught in Oklahoma for several years. She began her teaching career in a one-room school and eventually taught in the city school system in Altus, Oklahoma. Katie loved teaching and dedicated her life to her students, whom she always referred to as her 'children.' Katie was raised on a farm in Olustee, Oklahoma, and graduated from Oklahoma College for Women. Early in her career, she worked for Works Project Administration (WPA) teaching women sewing skills which they used to make clothing, bedding CAROTHERS, Kathryn (Katie) and supplies for hospitals and orphanages. Following her retirement from Lancaster School District in 1988, Katie took particular joy in working in her yard and growing beautiful roses. Her familys favorite memories include Katie and her Pomeranian, Scarlett, who was her treasured companion for a number of years and was fiercely protective of Katie. Katie was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 60 years and was a past Worthy Matron of the Olustee, Oklahoma, chapter. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, and her three brothers. Survivors include her son, Bill, and her daughter, Kathy Carothers; her nephew and his wife, Bill and Vicki Wilson; her great-nephew and his wife, Jarrod and Kimberly Wilson and their son, Kase, all of whom reside in Lancaster. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Marianne Prater, of Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews in Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri. The family expresses special gratitude to Danielle Rodney, Pam Munerlyn and Belinda Roberts for the wonderful care they provided for 'Grammy' in the last several years of her life. Inurnment will be private. The family requests that those who wish to honor Katie's memory donate to the scholarship fund of the Antelope Valley Chapter of the California Retired Teachers Association, 44437 Leatherwood Ave., Lancaster, Calif. 93534.
