CRAIG, Elizabeth Mary
CRAIG, Elizabeth Mary Born March 8, 1920, in Reading, Pa., passed away May 1, 2012 at 92. She graduated from the Misercordia Hospital School of Nursing and served as a nurse in the US Army in Iran and India during World War II where she met her husband Clayton D. Craig. After the war they married and lived in Inglewood, relocating to Santa Barbara in 1956. Liz worked many years as a night shift nursing supervisor at Cottage Hospital. After retirement they moved to Pioneer, Calif. and then Littlerock, Calif. in 1999. Liz returned to Santa Barbara following her husband's death. Her life was one of service to Christ through family, community and church. As a mom raising 11 children, her great faith shined into all circumstances. She recognized and celebrated everyone's individual worth especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her attendance at music recitals, school plays, graduations, weddings, funerals and sporting events was awesome. She was also known for being amazingly consistent in sending cards for birthdays. For Liz, sewing, reading and crossword puzzles were her form of relaxation. Within the community she was active in Alpha Resource Center and School, Association Retarded Citizens (ARC), Handicap Encounter Christ (HEC), St. Vincent dePaul and Catholic Charities. Liz and Craig established the coffee hour in St Barbara's Parish at the Old Mission. Throughout her life she served and became an essential part of each parish - Old Mission, Saint Barbara Parish, The Pines in Pioneer, and Our Lady of the Desert Mission, St. Mary's Parish in Littlerock. Liz was very involved in the 8 years she was in Littlerock. She was the mission's parish council secretary, a St. Mary's Crafter, volunteered with St. Vincent DePaul, helped at St. Andrew's Abbey, made turtle pillows for the Painted Turtle Camp, made weekly visits to the Carroll Manor Care Home, and cleaned and repaired dolls for the Santa's Workshop, sewing new dresses for each! Liz was always looking for material and sewed many blankets for the homeless shelter and the AV Pregnancy Crisis Center. She even sewed the robes used by the kids serving at mass. Preceding her in death were her husband C D Craig, children Margaret, Tommy, and Mary; her siblings Dorothy and Andrew. Liz is survived by her children, John (Lynn), Janie (Robby Guillermo), Ruth (Dave Ambriz), Trish, Tony (Diana), Rita (Johnny Flores), Dan (Rose Anne), Chris (Mark Bellefeuille), Nancy (Bernie Torres), Paul (Julie), 27 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 3 more coming as well as her sister Claire, Sister-in-law Noni Saunders (Jim) and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Barbara's Parish at the Old Mission with a memorial celebration following the burial. Arrangements by McDermott-Crockett Mortuary. The family asks that remembrances be made to Alpha Resource Center or Catholic Charities.
