EBBERT, Donald George
EBBERT, Donald George Captain US Navy Retired May 24, 1930 - Nov. 19, 2011 Born in Kansas City, Mo., to Fredrick Henderson Ebbert and Kathro Marion Jones. He graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Mo. in 1947. He graduated from Purdue University in Indiana in June 1952. He joined the Navy and completed flight training in Pensacola, Fla. He was then assigned to a fighter squadron at N.A.S. Miramar in San Diego. He left the Navy and went to work for Convair as a Flight Test Engineer on the F-102 and F-106 programs. He continued to fly for the Navy as a reserve officer on weekends out of N.A.S. Los Alamitos in Long Beach, Calif. Also during this time he took a year off and got his Masters Degree in Engineering from San Diego State. He also decided to try out for the Apollo astronaut program and was accepted into NASA group 3 and made it down to the final 34 candidates out of an initial 2000. In October 1966, he decided to go to work for Lockheed in Palmdale as a Flight Test Engineer on the Italian F-104 program. He was recalled to active duty in January 1968, because of the seizing of the U.S.S. Pueblo by the North Koreans. The recall was eventually called off but he opted to stay in the Navy after being offered a billet at the Naval Air Test Center at N.A.S. Patuxent River, Maryland where he graduated from the Test Pilot School as a member of the 54th Class in February 1970. He returned to Lockheed in Palmdale in 1972, for the remainder of his career where he was a pilot on the S-3A Viking, P-3 Orion, L-1011 and also the corporate Gulfstream III. Don retired in December 1989. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Betty, second wife Patricia and older brother Richard. He is survived by his son Gregory of Palmdale, Calif., son Daniel of Castle Rock, Colo., daughter Cynthia and husband David of Silverthorne, Colo. and grand-daughter Jennifer and husband David of Ogden, Utah.
