HEMPERLY, Hugh Clifton Jr. "Mike" Passed away Monday, September 19, 2011, at home, surrounded by his wife and his children. He was 82 1/2 years old. He was born March 17, 1929, in Phoenix, Arizona. Mike graduated from Union High school in Yuma, Arizona and attended the University of Arizona in Tucson for 3 years before enlisting in the Air Force. He was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. He met his bride, Madge, in Brawley, California and they were married March 29, 1952, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Mike was involved in construction his entire life. He owned and operated Asphalt Construction Company with his two sons for 47 years from 1963 to December 2010. He was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks Lodge #1625. He and Madge were members of the Rage of the Sage and Desert Sunrise Camper Clubs. They enjoyed many activities and had many wonderful Elks friends. Mike was an avid aviator. His sister, Ty Killen soloed him on his 16th birthday and he flew until health issues prevented him from flying. He owned airplanes which were hangared at Fox Field. He was preceded in death by his father Hugh Clifton Hemperly; his mother, Marie Meyerholtz; his sister, Marguerite "Ty" Killen; and his great-granddaughter, Raeann Marie Sharp. He is survived by Madge, his loving wife of 59 years; his children: Martha Williams, Clay Hemperly and Kim, Michael Hemperly and Sherrell, Teresa Schmidt and Scott. His grandchildren: Alissa Williams, Heather Williams, and Emily Williams; Collin Apodac and Heather, Hugh Clifton Robert; Sarah Sharp and Brandon, Jaimie O'Keefe and Chad, Kayla Morrow and John, Michael Jr., and Nicholas Montoya. His great-grandchildren: Ashland Williams, Carter Dural, Jacob Galvin; Zacarias and Sylis Apodac; Hayden Sharp; Payton O'Keefe; Cohen and Riley Grace Morrow; his brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Janet Meyerholtz and his beloved dog, Buddy. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at the BPO Elks Lodge, 240 E. Avenue K, Lancaster, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any gifts be sent to the BPO Elks Lodge #1625 or the USC Norris Cancer Center 1441 Eastlake Avenue, Los Angeles, CA in Mike's name.
