Obituary Notices and Memorials

WINCHELL, Dwight P. Sr. (Ike) Dwight Winchell, born on May 26, 1925, was called home on January 29, 2011, in the Valley he loved. He was born to Lewis A. and Betty Winchell in Greeley, Nebraska as the youngest of 5 children. With the death of his father in the early years of the Great Depression, the family migrated west to Los Angeles. Ike finished his schooling there, graduating from Hamilton High in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy immediately after, and after finishing basic training he joined the crew of the heavy cruiser CA25 Salt Lake City (Swayback Maru). He served on the SLC for the remainder of the war, and was in Tokyo Bay when the war ended. Upon his return, he moved out to the San Fernando Valley, where he worked in the construction industry with his brothers. One evening after work, he went bowling with some friends and met a young woman, Gwen Miles. After a short courtship they were wed, a marriage that lasted 62 years. They settled in the Valley and had 3 children, Ike Jr., Doug and Donna. Shortly thereafter, they moved to the Antelope Valley, and settled in Lancaster. They bought a house in town, and with the arrival of two more sons, Dennis and David, the family was complete. He continued to work in the construction industry until 1983, when he went into semi-retirement. Ike was a friend of Bill W., and spent much of his free time working with alcoholics. He shared his experiences with others, and furthered his knowledge by reading books of psychology, alcoholism and spirituality. He also attended classes at UCLA, where he earned an Associates degree. He loved working with and helping others, and until the onset of Alzheimers Disease forced him to retire, he could always be counted as a friend to those that needed help. He is survived by his wife, his 5 children, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday February 12, 2011, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Quartz Hill.
