McARTHUR, Merle Passed away January 24, 2011, in Mission Hills. Born July 25, 1930, and was raised in Cleveland, Georgia. Beloved mother and an inspiration to her family for her quiet strength and support. She was a Realtor in the Antelope Valley for 30 years, and PTA President in Palmdale in 1970s. Preceded in death by her sweetheart and husband of 57 years, Howard. She was a military wife to her husband who served in the U.S. Air Force for twenty years which took Merle and her children to live in Guam, as well as Florida and Illinois before settling down in Riverside, California in the mid 1950s. She loved to read mysteries, play video poker, black jack, and do crossword puzzles. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed road trips, sight seeing, and family gatherings. She loved her rose garden and country music. Survived by daughters; Carol (Danny) Santiago of Lancaster, Calif., Kaye Carpenter of College Station, Texas, Cynthia (Gene) Schmidt of Valencia, Calif., son Dennis McArthur of Encino, Calif., grandsons; Billy (Dawn) Hart of College Station, Texas, Sammy (Rizal) Santiago of Lancaster, Calif., seven great-grandchildren; sister; Betty Gailey and brother; Herbert Crane of Georgia, and brother Hoyt Crane of Alabama. Viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, February 3, 2011, Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, February 4, 2011, both at Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary Chapel, Lancaster. Burial will follow at Riverside National Cemetery, where she will be interred with her husband Howard.
