BARBER, MARVIN RUSSELL
BARBER, Marvin Russell Passed away at 10:55 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at AV Hospital. Known to friends and family as Russ, he was a longtime resident of the Valley. He was born Sept. 15, 1941, in Richmond, Mo., to Marvin and Mary E. Barber. He is survived by his wife Mary of Lancaster; brother Mike (Irene) Barber and sister Louise (Carl) Shafer, both of Illinois; daughter Monie (Gerry) Garcia of Lancaster; son William (Theresa) Barber of Hanford, Calif.; son-in-law Mike (Karen) Grace of Lancaster; step-daughters Susan Whiteside of Eureka, Calif., and Kathryn (Carl) McGehee of Green Forest, Ark.; step-sons Joseph (Rosemary) Charnley of Arundel, Maine and Peter Charnley of Green Forest, Ark.; and grandchildren Zackary, Bailey, Dane and Troy. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Andrew Barber and sister Frances Barber, all of Illinois, and step-daughter Patricia Grace of Lancaster. Raised throughout the Midwest, Russ graduated from Western Illinois University in 1963. He then began a 35 year career as a flight test engineer at NASA, most of which was spent at Edwards AFB but also included service in Virginia and Washington DC. After retiring from NASA in 1998, he continued working at Edwards, first for Applied Science and Materials, then for Tybrin, as a project manager and consultant. Russ was active in several youth activities in the Valley throughout the years, and was past president of Park View Little League. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman and guitarist. He especially enjoyed golf, and was involved with the Edwards Golf Club for many years. Service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Halley-Olsen-Murphy Chapels, 44802 N. Date St., Lancaster. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, respects be paid with donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
