Obituary Notices and Memorials

HERBERT, William John Sr. Mr. Herbert was born in Baltimore, Md. He was a great-great-grandson of a well known Civil War Hero General James R. Herbert, who was also the Mayor of Baltimore, Md. He followed the military tradition, serving and retiring from the U.S. Navy after thirty years of service. During this time he was involved in some great moments of history. He was on the Admiral Bird Expedition to the Southpole, sending home one of the first posted letters from the area. He was on the Philippine Sea, when President Roosevelt met with the King of Arabia on the ship. He was on the USS Murphy when it was hit by a foreign ship and cut in half. Being lucky enough to be on the part that stayed afloat. Bill found nothing more enjoyable than reliving those times in the service. He had such pride in all who served. Last year he was able to see one of his grandsons sworn in the Air Force. More recently another grandson following his footsteps in the Navy. He was truly a family man. Found pride in his home and family. He had the most beautiful blue eyes that came to life when he was near a child. His love of children took him through the neighborhood for 30 years as Santa Claus. He would start growing the beard in the summer (it had to be real). He would go through the neighborhood, knocking on every door that had a child. Handing out candy canes, taking pictures and of course taking that all important letter. He was retired when he became a grandpa and was very active with his grandchildren. He had a special love for his animals, who remained by his side until his death. Darby, Sparky, Big Daddy and Weiner will be lost without him. He was always giving or helping those less fortunate then himself. He is survived by his children Sharon Kuhn, William Herbert Jr., and Kellie Brown, grandchildren Melinda Gurley, Kimberly Fuqua, Brandon Brown, Vance Brown and Kristle Herbert, great-grandchildren Kyle Kuhn, Stephanie Kuhn, Kevin Gurley, Stephen Teran, Leslie Teran, Erin Hicks, nieces, Anne, Carol and Linda, numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Frances Herbert, father Edwin Herbert, mother Edna Herbert, brother Roland Herbert, sister Harriet Brown, granddaughter Tami Hicks, son-in-law Stephen Kuhn. Our Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Uncle and Great Uncle will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers please send donations to any Veterans Organization of your choice (support our serviceman), Procare Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary, Lancaster.
